Military Service

Will I automatically be granted a deferment from military service (on education grounds) if I am accepted to a UWC college?

The procedure of receiving a deferment from military service by Armenian citizens is regulated by the Law on Military Service and the Status of Military (the "Law").

Neither the National Committee, nor any of the UWC colleges could guarantee that the admission to any UWC college will automatically qualify you for a deferment from military service.

Under the general rule of the Law, a deferment from military service can be granted to individuals studying in the Republic of Armenia or abroad based on a general education program, as well as to the individuals being enrolled without interruption to primary vocational programs (arts and crafts) based on primary education.

In this case, the deferment is granted until the end of the studies, but not longer, then the day the individual turns 19.

Please note that it is your responsibility to know your rights and obligations, as well as to follow any procedure you are required to follow under the law.

What steps do I need to take to apply for deferment from military service (on education grounds) if I am admitted to UWC Dilijan?

In accordance with its license, the UWCD College realizes a secondary general educational program . UWC Dilijan is annually requested to provide the list of students, holding Armenian nationality, who as of the date they have turned 18 years old, have not concluded their studies at the College.

If you attend UWCD, your name and requested information about you will be included into this list.

While studying at UWCD College you could still be requested to come to the respective military office. Please note, the College does not coordinate this process.

If you require additional support or documentation, please refer to the UWC Dilijan Admissions’ Office.

If you have been granted a deferment until the date you turn 19, but as of that date you have not yet completed your studies at the College, you can apply to the Government of the RA. In that case, the Government could grant a one-time deferment until the date you complete your studies (inclusive).

What steps do I need to take to apply for deferment from military service (on education grounds) if I am admitted to UWC College other than UWC Dilijan?

If you

  • study at a UWC College (other than UWC Dilijan) and the program of the respective College is recognized as sufficient to give basis for a deferment,
  • have turned 18 years old, but you have not yet completed your studies at a respective UWC College

you need to send a request to the Minister of Science and Education (currently, the Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sport) so that your name is included in the aggregated list of individuals, expecting a deferment.

Please check the RA Government Decree N 430-Ն as of 12.04.2018 (Annex 2, clause 4). That is where you can find the list of information that you need to provide together with your request.

Please do not forget, that documents issued in a foreign language, need to be translated into Armenian and the translation needs to be notarized.

The Ministry of Science and Education (currently, the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport) provides the list of individuals, expecting deferment to the Ministry of Defense not later, that June 15th or December 15th of the respective year. The Decree does not specify the dates, when you need to present your request to the Minister. Please contact the Ministry directly to understand when they would be expecting your request (depending on the date, when you turn 18 years old). In any event, please make sure, that you have sent the information in advance.

If you have been granted a deferment until the date you turn 19, but as of that date you have not yet completed your studies at the respective College, you can apply to the Government of the RA. In that case, the Government could grant a one-time deferment until the date you complete your studies (inclusive).

Do I have other options for deferment, if I have specific talents?

In exceptional cases the Government of the RA could grant a deferment to those, who have significant achievements in the field of culture, arts and sports.

See Art. 21 (5) of the Law, Government Decree N 89-Ն as of 15.02.2019, Government Decree N 457-Ն as of 12.04.2018, and Government Decree N 450-Ն as of 12.04.2018.

Canceling of the Right to Deferment

A right to deferment, granted based on the studies, is cancelled if the student is no longer enrolled at the educational institution or the student has been expelled.
